Leaving Vancouver and the start of Contiki

Hi guys

Continuing my story when I was at Vancouver airport...

I had 3 connecting flights to get to New Orleans to start my Southern Adventure Contiki tour. But because of the crazy winter weather, my flight was continually delayed for 3 hours, and then it was cancelled. It was my first time ever travelling by myself so I was stressing out and calling my parents who tried to calm me down. Air Canada put me up in a hotel for the night, which had a huge comfy bed. It was awesome! I skyped Mum and Dad while I was on the phone with the airline trying to work out new flights for about an hour and a half! It ended up working out best to stay an extra night in Vancouver and fly to Memphis and meet up with my Contiki tour there. So I missed the first two days of Contiki, but it worked out for the best.

I arrived at the hotel in Memphis the night of the 21st. The Contiki group had gone out to a basketball and later that night my roommate, Adriana from Brazil, arrived. She was really nice.

My Southern Adventure Contiki tour started in New Orleans and ended in Los Angeles. My tour actually joined up with the Grand Southern tour which started in New York City, so the majority of people on my bus had already been travelling for two weeks! Pretty much the whole tour group was Aussie. There were a few from New Zealand, one from Brazil, and one from South Africa. There was 53 of us in total! On my first day I found out that my tour manager, Ryan, doesn't care about luggage weight. Biggest relief!!

We all got on the bus and went to Graceland, Elvis Presley's home. We had an audio tour. It was really cool being able to see most of the rooms in his house. Compared to what mansions are today, it was more like a big house. The interior decorating was so interesting and different in each room. We also got to see his costumes, awards, and his grave.

Adriana, Brittany, Hannah and I had our photo taken.

We then went to a 50s diner and I had french fries and a strawberry milkshake.

We all got back on the bus and went to the National Civil Rights Museum. The actual museum was closed but it was being built around the Lorraine Motel, which we got to see. This was where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. We saw the exact spot where he died. We also got to see the window in the hotel across the street where the shooter was.

We then went to Sun Studios, where Elvis and Johnny Cash recorded songs back in the day. We didn't get to actually see the studios.

We then had a free afternoon so we got dropped off downtown. Brittany told Adriana and I that everyone on the tour is dressing up for Christmas Day, and we needed some Christmasy costumes, so we went on an adventure with Hannah to find some. We walked along Beale St, but that is mainly for nightlife.

Then we walked along Main St to get to our hotel, but it was so quiet. No one was around so it was like a ghost town! We got a taxi at our hotel and went to a costume store just outside of downtown. Our taxi guide was a really nice local and pointed out things along the way like a tour guide. The costume store turned out to be rental only, and we needed to buy as we'd be spending Christmas in Texas. We had lunch at Applebee's nearby then our taxi guy picked us up and took us to another costume store called Party City. They didn't have much, but I got some santa socks and a santa robe.

That night we all went to dinner at the Kooky Canuck restaurant, which was included in the price of our tour. Our appetizer was deep fried pickles with honey mustard sauce. They looked pretty gross but when in the South, you have to try these things! They weren't too bad. For dessert we got to make s'mores right at the table. It was awesome and they were so delicious :)

We came back to the hotel and I got to skype Kurtis for the first time. It was so fun and so good to see him, but it was hard not being able to reach out and touch him.

The next day we packed, got on the bus and started our journey to Dallas! On long bus days we got to have short bathroom and snack breaks which was good. On this trip we stopped at Little Rock, Arkansas. We got to see the Capitol Building and statues of the Little Rock Nine.

We watched the movie 'The Help' on the bus, and then stopped at a town called Texarkana for lunch, which is on the state line between Texas and Arkansas.

Back on the bus we played introduction games. I had to stand at the front of the bus and speak into the microphone introducing myself, the best place in the world, my relationship status (now taken!), my most embarrassing story, and answer a random question someone wrote which was "Would you rather be respected and not loved, or loved and not respected?"

We arrived in Dallas and got off to take some photos of longhorn statues.

We walked through the city of Dallas to go to dinner at a restaurant called Gators for all you can eat fajitas, and I got to meet some more people on the tour. Dallas is a much more metropolitan city than I was expecting!

We then went to a haunted house! I went through with Adriana and Lachlan from New Zealand. I was in the middle and holding onto them so tightly and screaming heaps haha. I think the Dunbar Haunted House that I went to in Vancouver was a lot better though! We went back to Gators afterwards, because it had a bar, and a few people did karaoke. It was only my second full day on Contiki and I already caught the dreaded Contiki cough and was so sick with a cold :(

On Christmas Eve we had a free morning in Dallas. Adriana and I walked through the city to go to a store that sells authentic Western wear because I wanted to buy some cowboy boots! But when we got there it was closed for the holidays. We found a really cool souvenir store called Wild Wild West and I went a bit crazy in there. I got a hoodie, 2 t-shirts, a cowboy boot ornament, and a t-shirt for Dad. I also found cowboy boots!! They're tan leather and have the cool embroidery on them. We walked back to the hotel to drop off our shopping then had lunch at Subway. We got to see the exact spot on the road where JFK was shot, and the grassy knoll.

We met up with the Contiki group at the 6th Floor Museum which is on the 6th floor of the Old Texas Boook Depository, which is supposedly where Lee Harvey Oswald was when he assassinated JFK. We had an audio tour of the museum which told you all about JFK's life and his time as president, and all about his assassination. It was so interesting to actually see everything after learning about all of this back in Year 11 Modern History! I wish we could have stayed in there longer so I could have read everything, but we were short on time.

We then got on a bus to go to the Dallas Cowboys Stadium for a tour. This is their American football team. The stadium is huge and so impressive. It cost $1.2 billion to make and has $40 million gigantic TV screens suspended above the field. We got to go out on the field and take photos. We also saw the after game interview room, the press room, a suite, the Cowboys locker room, and the cheerleaders locker room. I got to try on a jersey with the protective pads and I looked hilarious haha!

We then went to Fort Worth Stockyards. Because it was Christmas Eve, most of the stores were closed, but we got to look in a few souvenir stores, and I didn't buy anything! Shocking, I know.

We went to dinner at Riscky's Barbecue for real Texan beef ribs. There was so much of it, and I was so full afterwards.

It was Christmas Day in Australia so that night I tried to skype my family while they were having the big family lunch, but the internet connection was terrible so it failed :(

Christmas Day was spent leaving Dallas and heading to Amarillo, Texas. It wasn't a great day for me. I felt really alone and homesick being away from my family on my favourite holiday! Before leaving UBC, members of my family had sent over little Christmas presents that I had to take travelling with me and I wasn't allowed to open until Christmas Day. Clara gave me a little one too. They were really great presents, and made me feel closer to them. Thank you guys :) Mum and Dad gave me a voucher for a return flight to anywhere in the world, so that's why I'm going to Spain and Canada in July.

Along the bus ride at our first quick stop it was really windy and snowing. That's right, my very first white Christmas!! There was also a sign to watch out for rattlesnakes.

Once in Amarillo, we checked into our hotel rooms which were totally Western themed. It was awesome!! They even had swing doors going into the bathroom!

Right across from the hotel was the Big Texan Steak Ranch restaurant. We went across and checked it out. It was absolutely freezing outside.

We changed into our Christmas costumes and went to the restaurant for Christmas dinner. The food was so good. I had salad, steak, stuffing, bread, a baked potato, and pecan pie.

I was so full, but definitely not as full as the 4 guys from Contiki who took on the 72 ounce steak challenge. They get a 72 ounce steak (which is 2.04kg), all of the sides that we all had, and they have to eat all of it within one hour, otherwise you have to pay $72. None of the guys finished it, but one of them had 60 ounces of steak (1.7kg)!! The record of all time is 8 minutes and 52 seconds. The oldest to complete the challenge was a 69 year old grandmother and the youngest was an 11 year old boy. Ryan, our tour manager, did it in 2011 in 56 minutes.

We then all exchanged secret santa presents. The guy that I had apparently really liked snickers, so I gave him a huge bag of mini snickers. I ended up getting another Texas cowboy boot ornament, very similar to the one I bought myself haha. We then had a costume contest. My costume was pretty lame compared to others so I obviously didn't win.

There's much more to blog about Contiki so I'll be back with more soon!!

Emily

Thank You

As my university exchange as now ended, it's time to say some very special thank you's and goodbyes.

Dear Canada,
Thank you for allowing me to live in and welcoming me to your absolutely beautiful country for the past 5 months. On my travels I got to see many amazing places including Vancouver, Penticton, Revelstoke, Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper, Edmonton, Whistler, Whitehorse, Toronto, Mont Tremblant, Montreal, and Quebec; all unique and equally breathtaking in their own ways. I got to experience a range of different weathers, from really hot summer days, to -38!!! I fell in love with the Canadian people, accents, culture, landscapes, and food (poutine, yam fries, beef dip, bear paws, and beavertails!). I cannot wait to return to Canada this July for two weeks and hopefully many more times in the future :)

Dear British Columbia,
The phrase "Beautiful British Columbia" does not disappoint. From mountainous terrains, to gorgeous cities, and ski resorts this province has everything to offer, and I was extremely lucky to be able to call this place home for four mouths.

Dear Vancouver,
Thank you for being an amazing city to live in. Despite living up to the name 'Raincouver' on more than one occasion, and giving my umbrella and rain boots a workout, I loved every second I spent here. Robson St for fantastic shopping and food, the interesting mix of old and new architecture, the waterfront view with the mountains in the distance, Canada Place, the Olympic Cauldron, the awesome food carts, Capilano Suspension Bridge, the steam clock in Gastown, gorgeous English Bay Beach at sunset, riding in a seaplane, riding bikes around beautiful Stanley Park, the Vancouver Aquarium, Granville Island's fresh food, the Vancouver Lookout's stunning views, all the great dessert places, ziplining at Grouse Mountain, and finally, UBC. Everything I did there was so memorable and something I will never forget. I'll be visiting again in July and I know that won't be the last time.

Dear UBC,
Thank you for being an incredible university to study at. I gained a completely different experience living on such a beautiful (and huge) campus. Thank you for providing me with courses that were interesting yet challenging, and giving me a much better average than I get here in Sydney! Thank you for the experiences I had there, like visitng the Japanese Garden, the Rose Garden, the Botanical Gardens, climbing the 500 stairs up from Wreck Beach multiple times, going to football, ice hocky, volleyball, and basketball games, the opportunity to participate in so many different events like Day of the Longboat, and meeting friends that will last a lifetime. I've bought so much merchandise with UBC plastered all over them, and the University of British Columbia will always hold a special place in my heart.

Dear Place Vanier,
Thank you for being an awesome place to live on campus. Thank you for providing me with somewhat good cafeteria food every day. Thank you for putting on so many events like Vanier Olympics, Graffiti Night, Sock Wars, Horror Ball, Halloween House Hop, Winter Formal, Casino Night, and the Robson Pageant. They were all so much fun, and despite being a 2nd year student, I really felt like I got to experience a first year dorm college life.

Dear TweedSL,
Thank you for being a great combination of houses! We came second place in Vanier Olympics, won Best House Spirit, won the Vanier Ultimate League, and won Do It In The Dark! Royal Army for life. TWEEDSL ARE YOU SEXY? SIR YES SIR!

Dear Sherwood Lett,
Thank you for being a lovely house to live in. Despite being one of the oldest houses in Vanier, and pulling the fire alarm in first week, having easy to blow fuses, broken down washing machines and dryers, and giving us no hot water for a week, you still managed to be a cute and cosy house and I mananged to turn my little room into a home. Thank you for providing me with views from my window of squirrels chasing each other and giving me a private place to spy on people randomly singing while walking down the path.

Dear exchange friends,
Thank you for making my exchange experience the best it could be. Thank you for being like-minded people who love to travel, and thank you for being my buddies to touristy places. Thank you for encouraging and coming with me on trips that I could only imagine going on. Our UBC exchange experience was a great one. It may be over now, but we will all see each other in the future :)

Dear my SL 4th girls,
Thank you all so much for making my exchange experience the best time of my life. You are all amazing girls and I already miss you so much!! I had so much fun getting to know you all, hanging out, and going on adventures. Playing "move your butt" on our first day, the dining hall dash, tie-dying t-shirts, exploring campus, our group dinners in the caf, open air movies in first week, decorating the floor lounge, going to our first frat party, visiting the Japanese Garden and Botanical Gardens, our visit to Wreck Beach at sunset and our Wreck Beach bonfire, watching UBC sports games, Vanier Olympics, participating in Day of the Longboat, celebrating everyone's birthdays, scaring the floormates in the bathroom, Graffiti Night, Sock Wars, the Dunbar Haunted House, exploring downtown, cooking Thanksgiving dinner, multiple shopping adventures, Horror Ball and the Halloween House Hop, playing in the leaves outside, playing in the snow, creating my awesome post-it wall, trips to Safeway, Winter Formal, Robson Pageant, watching movies, chilling in the lounge, our serious chats, our cute and hilarious chats, and so much more. There were so many laughs and smiles, and a bit of tears at the end. I know I have made friends for a lifetime with you girls. This isn't a goodbye. I'll see you all soon in the future :)

Dear Kurtis,
I'm so glad that I met you at Graffiti Night. We started off as friends, feelings suddenly grew, and we were able to start our relationship. When I applied for exchange I had no intentions of this happening, but I'm SO happy it did. Thank you for always being there for me, and for making me the happiest girl in the world. I love you so much and I seriously cannot wait to see you in July :)

Dear Australian friends and family,
Thank you so much for encouraging me and supporting me before I left, and while i was away from home. Your Skype calls and letters got me through my little spells of homesickness. I want to give a very special thank you to my parents for absolutely everything. When I had my doubts about exchange before leaving, you both believed in me and encouraged me to do it, as you know I'd been dreaming about exchange since I started high school. Thank you for helping me settle in, for funding my trip, and for giving me the amazing Christmas present of visiting Clara in Spain and Kurtis in Vancouver in July this year. I love you both so much.

My exchange experience was the most incredible time of my life and I'm so grateful that I got the chance to do it. Although I'm so sad that It's come to an end, it's time for new adventures, and I will be visiting Vancouver and UBC again soon <3

Love,
Emily

My last week at UBC

Hi everyone!

Yes, I am still alive. I'm back in Sydney, Australia now so I guess it's time to get back into the business of blogging and let you know the ending instead of leaving you hanging!

Before I start, I want to officially announce on my blog that Kurtis is my boyfriend. I've talked about him in a few of my past blogs. I didn't plan on this happening while I was on exchange but it did! We're incredibly happy together and are now in a long distance relationship :)

The day after I got back from the Yukon, Kurtis and I went out to dinner then went to the Van Dusen Botanical Gardens to see the Festival of Lights. The whole garden was covered in Christmas fairy lights. It was absolutely gorgeous. I loved it. I want my future backyard to look like this!

We walked around the garden while listening to Christmas songs. It was so much fun :)

I had my Social Interaction exam a couple of days after, which I found really hard.

On the 13th, we got to celebrate Clara's birthday!! Abby, Marie and I decorated her door while she was out, and I ordered her a cookie cake. She loved it all :)

A few of us girls were chilling in the floor lounge for awhile. I had to say goodbye to Joanne! It was my first goodbye and I was crying so much. She signed my flag and we exchanged letters. I wrote a letter to every girl on my floor.

I gave Abby, Clara and Marie each a necklace, and I got one for myself too. It's a silver necklace with a tiny little bow pendant. Like 'forget me knot' :)

The next day I had to say goodbye to Marie which was really sad and involved more tears from me! In the afternoon I went downtown with Clara to go shopping. I bought Kurtis his Christmas presents. Yes, that's right, presents! I got him six, haha!

That night my floormates threw me a party. My RA, Lotem, organised it. We had lemonade, hot chocolate, sushi, snacks, and ice cream cake that she made herself. About 13 of us snuggled in the lounge with our blankets and pillows and we watched the first Harry Potter movie. Naiomi had made us cake pops which were so amazing!

I gave some of the girls their letters and a lot of them signed my giant Canadian flag. They gave me a present. There was a card that they all signed, and they got me a new travel journal and an infinity necklace. It's so pretty. I was crying so much and we had a big group hug. We all watched Mean Girls together then I skyped the family for an hour, and went to bed at 2am!

The next morning Kendra and Rebekah shows me that it was snowing at UBC! It snowed all morning and looked so pretty. It didn't stick on the ground though. It was an awesome distraction from studying.

That day I just couldn't concentrate on studying. I only had 4 days left at UBC! I had to say goodbye to a few more girls and I hung out with my friends. I took down my post-it wall and photos, gave out more letters and got more messages on my flag. I also wrote a message to my SL 4th girls on a big piece of cardboard and stuck it on my door for them all to read.

I went out to a Japanese restaurant for dinner with my Aussie exchange friends, Rikki and Sally. We then went downtown to Stanley Park to see the Christmas train. The little park around the train was full of fairy lights. It was pretty, but I liked the Botanical Gardens better.

We walked around, got a photo with Santa, had churros and hot chocolate, then went on the train which was really cute. Once we got back to UBC, I said my goodbyes to Rikki and Sally and gave them their letters. I moved my mattress into Clara's room and we had a sleepover! We put Aussie flag tattoos on all over our bodies. It was so much fun.

The next night Kurtis and I exchanged Christmas presents. He gave me a really beautiful silver heart necklace. I wore it for awhile but when we were taking it off the chain broke
:( Now that I'm home I've taken it to a jewellers and it is currently being fixed!

To avoid having way too much luggage for Contiki I sent a second and third box full of stuff home!

On my third last night at UBC, I went out to dinner with Kurtis and I got to meet his Mum. I was so nervous, but she's so lovely. We had a great time :)

On my second last day I went on an adventure all over campus with Clara. We went to Starbucks, then to the library so she could print things, then to so many places to find out how I could transfer the leftover money on my UBC card so I could spend it on something practical, rather than food, or just waste it! Clara is so stubborn, and she talked to lots of people and made phone calls pretending to be me, and she got it all sorted out for me! We went to the bookstore and I bought UBC hoodies for Abby, Clara and Kurtis. Clara and Kurtis are now twins, because they got the same one.

I went out to dinner to Mahoney & Sons irish pub on campus with Clara and Kurtis which was really good. When we got back, Clara and I exchanged letters. Hers made me cry, then she beat me up. Such a loving friendship we have haha! Clara and Kurtis then helped me pack. On Contiki tours, your luggage has to be under 20kg at the start. My bag was a bit over so I was stressing majorly. Lucky they were there to help me. They're amazing friends and I'm so happy to have them in my life :) I ended up leaving some things with Kurtis to lighten the load.

On my very last day at UBC, I woke up to snow everywhere on campus! It was absolutely gorgeous and I was so excited. This was exactly what I wanted to experience while on exchange; snow where I lived! Abby and I exchanged letters in the morning. Hers was so nice.

I went out and played in the snow with my floormates who were still around on campus. It was so much fun!! Rebekah wrote my name in the snow, and Kelsey made the base of a snowman!

I got more messages on my flag, and I said goodbye to Lotem. We found out exams had been cancelled because of the crazy weather and were being rescheduled for January. I was meant to have my Crime and Society final exam. I was freaking out because I didn't know what that would mean for me as I wouldn't be there! I was sending frantic emails to my professor, my UBC exchange advisor, and my USYD exchange advisor. One of my exchange friends from that class texted me and told me that our professor was still holding the exam for those of us that were on campus. I hadn't studied all morning and I was freaking out! In a mad rush I got ready and I practically jogged to my exam in the snow! I didn't think my exam went that well, as I stressed and not prepared. But, when I got my UBC final results back, I got a distinction for each subject! I did so much better while on exchange than I ever have at USYD!

Because of the weather, public transport in Vancouver was experiencing major delays, and a lot of flights were being delayed or cancelled. Clara had booked me a taxi so I could get to the airport. After my exam, I exchanged letters with Kurtis which was really sad but his letter was so lovely and made me cry so much. I said goodbye to my little dorm room and some of my floormates and then caught the taxi to the airport. Kurtis, Clara, and Abby came with me. We got there a bit too early so we got to hang out together one last time.

Saying goodbye to them all was so difficult, but I know I'll be seeing them again in the future.

Love,
Emily
